As for how well he would do as a Gladiator I would say he should rely more on his speed and ajility more than his strength and toughness. Then he would stand a chance.
An interesting thing to remember about the old gladatorial arenas was that they were the equilivant of Pro-Wrestling today. Complete with dynamic personalities, outlandish costumes (Easier to recognise your favorites from the back rows), agreements to "draw out" a match so it's more entertaining and of course the skill to "Kill on Cue."
I could see this pointy eared fellow becoming an arena favorite should he survive long enough to make a name for himself.
